These three festival shows are iconic for many reasons. The Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock opened the doors for the hippie movement and showed the rest of the country and the world that they could not continue to ignore the youth. Altamont, on the other hand, has been co-opted by authorities as being indicative of the chaos that comes with change. Rolling Stone interviewed Grace about what it was like to be at the center of so many cultural events—especially the Altamont festival, which used the Hell’s Angels as a security staff (with predictable results).  You can read more all about it in the June issue, which hit the shelves mid-May. You can read some of that interview on RollingStone.com --- ### Grace Slick’s California Art Tour Concludes! - **URL:** https://www.areaarts.com/grace-slicks-california-art-tour-concludes/ - **Published:** 2014-05-29 - **Modified:** 2025-07-21 - **Author:** admin **Categories:** Area Arts News Updates Grace Slick has been traveling up and down California this year, promoting her visual art collection “Welcome to Wonderland” in San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Laguna Beach, and more. - See Welcome to Wonderland Fans of her work point to a love of the rich color, thick line, and creative spirit that Slick embodies. Those who purchased a piece were all given time to take a photo and have a chat with the artist. It’s been a great and rare opportunity for people to get a chance to connect with the counter-culture icon. Although indifferent to critical praise or scorn, Grace nevertheless still enjoys communicating with people who resonate with her work, a callback to her roots as a performer. The audience and the arena may be different, but after over having over 100 exhibits throughout the country, Grace has fully stepped into her role in the art world. For many, the revolutionary spirit of the 60’s faded, but Slick has found a way to continue to grow as an artist and social commentator, reflecting the zeitgeist of the times through a different lens. Her message is no less impactful, loud, or pointed in her visual art than it was in her music. --- ### The Sixties: CNN’s new 10-part series features Grace Slick - **URL:** https://www.areaarts.com/sixties-cnns-new-10-part-series-features-grace-slick/ - **Published:** 2014-05-27 - **Modified:** 2025-07-21 - **Author:** admin **Categories:** Area Arts News Updates CNN partnered with Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman to produce this miniseries, which premieres May 29th. It will explore everything from the decade that shaped America, from the space race, politics, and war to music, art, and counter-culture. Viewers will see many iconic figures from the time interviewed for their first-hand perspective. CNN Special "The Sixties" Unsurprisingly, Grace Slick was a go-to for the producers. The rock goddess turned visual artist has never shied away from speaking her mind, and who better to give us some insight into the counter-culture movement than the lady who teamed up with Abbie Hoffman in an attempt to dose President Nixon’s tea with LSD? What other parts of 1960’s do you feel deserve a voice in this mini-series? Is there anything shouldn’t be mentioned? And more importantly, why are the ‘60s still so captivating to us, even more than fifty years later? --- ### "A Conversation with Grace Slick" featured at the Grammy Museum - **URL:** https://www.areaarts.com/conversation-grace-slick-featured-grammy-museum/ - **Published:** 2014-05-24 - **Modified:** 2025-07-21 - **Author:** admin **Categories:** Area Arts News Updates [caption id="attachment_2830" align="alignleft" width="300"] The Grammy Museum in LA will be hosting “A Conversation with Grace Slick” on June 17th[/caption] The Grammy Museum in LA will be hosting “A Conversation with Grace Slick” on June 17th. Janis Joplin blazed across the sixties music scene, electrifying audiences with her staggering voice and the way she seemed to pour her very soul into her music. By the time her life and artistry were cut tragically short by a heroin overdose, Joplin had become the stuff of rock–and–roll legend. Through the eyes of her family and closest friends , we see Janis as a young girl, already rebelling against injustice, racism, and hypocrisy in society. We follow Janis as she discovers her amazing talents in the Beat hangouts of Venice and North Beach–singing in coffeehouses, shooting speed to enhance her creativity, challenging the norms of straight society. Janis truly came into her own in the fantastic, psychedelic, acid–soaked world of Haight–Asbury. At the height of her fame, Janis's life is a whirlwind of public adoration and hard living. Laura Joplin shows us not only the public Janice who could drink Jim Morrison under the table and bean him with a bottle of booze when he got fresh; she shows us the private Janis, struggling to perfect her art, searching for the balance between love and stardom, battling to overcome her alcohol addiction and heroin use in a world where substance abuse was nearly universal. At the heart of Love, Janis is an astonishing series of letters by Janis herself that have never been previously published. In them she conveys as no one else could the wild ride from awkward small–town teenager to rock–and–roll queen. Love, Janis is the new life of Janis Joplin we have been waiting for–a celebration of the sixties' joyous experimentation and creativity, and a loving, compassionate examination of one of that era's greatest talents. --- ### Grace Slick T-Shirt - **URL:** https://www.areaarts.com/grace-slick-t-shirt/ - **Published:** 2009-12-02 - **Modified:** 2025-07-21 - **Author:** admin **Categories:** Store [caption id="attachment_1088" align="alignleft" width="175" caption="Front Left Chest Area (small)"][/caption] [caption id="attachment_1089" align="alignright" width="200" caption="Back (Large)"][/caption] ©Area Arts All rights reserved Grace Slick T Shirt Black & White Rabbit White - 100% cotton Available in Large and Extra Large Retail $25.00 Shipping $7.50 Grace Slick T Shirt Add to Cart --- ### Janis Joplin T-Shirt - **URL:** https://www.areaarts.com/janis-joplin-t-shirt/ - **Published:** 2009-12-02 - **Modified:** 2025-07-21 - **Author:** admin **Categories:** Store [caption id="attachment_1199" align="alignleft" width="175" caption="Front Left Chest Area (small)"][/caption] [caption id="attachment_1198" align="alignright" width="200" caption="Back (Large)"][/caption] ©Area Arts All rights reserved Janis Joplin T Shirt SELF PORTRAIT White - 100% cotton Available in Large and Extra Large Retail $25.00 Shipping $7.50 Janis Joplin T Shirt Add to Cart --- ### WILDFLOWER by Grace Slick - **URL:** https://www.areaarts.com/wildflower-by-grace-slick/ - **Published:** 2009-11-10 - **Modified:** 2025-07-21 - **Author:** admin **Categories:** Original Paintings [singlepic id=183 w=320 h=240 float=left] WILDFLOWER Original Painting by Grace Slick Acrylic on canvas 18"x14" 2007 Price on request ©Area Arts All Rights Reserved WILDFLOWER "Janis was like a wildflower that blooms beautifully in the early spring, but fades and disappears in the harsh light of the summer sun. The silkscreen technique was flourishing in LA at the studio that printed Patrick’s editions. When you look at the quality of the image as well as the process, you see a group of truly exceptional artwork. The pieces being offered for sale here are from my personal collection and are in pristine, mint condition. We hope that you enjoy looking back at this very creative time in the early 80s. - Scott [su_accordion][su_spoiler title="Click here Read More about Patrick Nagel"] Nagel Patrick Nagel is known for his paintings, prints, sculptures, posters and overall craftsmanship during the 1970s and 80s. His style is immediately recognizable due to his personal ideal of the image of women. When one thinks of the artwork of Patrick Nagel, one envisions the depictions of women who are strong yet vulnerable, in the present yet aloof, elegant yet a little on the edge. It is for these reasons that his artwork appeared in Playboy and Architectural Digest magazines as well as gracing the cover of a Duran Duran 1983 album. Because he was attracted to Japanese woodblock prints and their precision, his work also entails a simple form of exactitude. Nagel was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1945 but was raised in the Los Angeles, California area. His education entailed studying fine art at Chouinard Art Institute and at California State University, Fullerton, for which he received a BA in fine arts in 1969 in painting and graphic design. He began his art career by teaching at the Art Center College of Design. As his work in the art world progressed, he ultimately created his own niche in the illustrative arena. Just like his artwork, Patrick Nagel, the man, was intriguing: he was stylish, elegant and quiet yet at the same time created his own entertainment by drinking, smoking, enjoying fast food and staying up all night. Before his premature death at the age of 38 in 1984, he was able to make his mark in the art world in that one can find his artwork in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, and the Musee de L’Affiche in Paris. We had our first exhibit with Richard in 1984. His printmaking was fantastic at a time when the craziness of the 1980s was really ramping up. His comparison to Warhol is a testament to the caliber of art that he created. The last project that we worked on together was the Hendrix album cover series. Since his passing in 2014, many people have requested that I show his work once again. I have put together a group of his large format silkscreens which reflect the scope of his talent. The editions that he created were usually small. 15 to 20 in some cases. Master prints of this quality are rarely produced any more. Most printers have moved into digital processes which have benefits but lack the depth and color of these hand-pulled silkscreens from a different era. The pieces that have survived are extremely rare and collectible. Curating these works is basically a one-of-a-kind search. We have included new framing for all the pieces listed. I hope that you enjoy Richard’s work. - Scott [su_accordion][su_spoiler title="Click here Read More about Richard Duardo"] Duardo Richard Duardo is best known as a master fine art screen printer, although he concurrently had a four-decade long career as an artist in Los Angeles. Often called the “West Coast Warhol,” he was well-respected in the L.A. art scene and was one of the founders of Modern Multiples – a West Coast printshop that was quite prolific and influential. Moreover, he was a co-founder of the Centro de Arte Publico in the late 1970s; this was a Highland Park art collective which was rather political. Another business of his was Future Perfect Publishing, a contract silkscreen print studio where his expert printmaking skills caused him to be internationally recognized as the best serigraph artist in Los Angeles. Ultimately, he was named Artist of the Year by the California Arts Council in 1988. His passion and forte was transforming great art into beautiful prints. He created large-scale, colorful prints of famous musicians/entertainers such as Duke Ellington, Lauren Bacall, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and Madonna, as well as other artists like Frida Kahlo, Keith Haring, Mark Mothersbaugh, John Van Hamersveld, Mick Haggerty, David Hockney, Chaz Bojorquez, Banksy, including Andy Warhol himself. After getting his start in art from the Pasadena Community College, he then graduated from with a B.A. in graphic design and a master’s degree in fine art from UCLA. Because he didn’t want to get too far from his 1952 Chicano roots, he went back to his native neighborhood in the Boyle Heights section of East L.A. where he developed a keen eye for other artists who would benefit from his gregariousness and mentorship. This pivotal, passionate artist and printer passed away at age 62 in November 2014. He began his under graduate studies at the Yale University of Art and Architecture in 1970. In 1972 he participated in an independent study program under Earl Hoffman at St. Mary’s College. He returned to the Yale School of Art and Architecture in 1974 where he completed his graduate work in 1976, followed by post-graduate studies at the Musee de l’Orangerie, in Paris. He taught Life Drawing and Painting, briefly from 1979 to 1980, at Antioch College. [su_accordion][su_spoiler title="Click here Read More about Tom Everhart"] In 1980, Tom Everhart was introduced to cartoonist Charles M. Schulz at Schulz’s studios in Santa Rosa, California. A few weeks prior to their meeting, Everhart, having absolutely no education in cartooning, found himself involved in a freelance project that required him to draw and present Peanuts renderings to Schulz’s studios. Preparing as he would the drawings and studies for his large-scale skeleton / nature related paintings; he blew up some of the cartoonist’s strips on a twenty-five foot wall in his studio which eliminated the perimeter lines of the cartoon box, leaving only the marks of the cartoonist. Schulz’s painterly pen stroke, now larger than life, translated into painterly brush strokes and was now a language that overwhelmingly connected to Everhart’s own form of expression and communication. Completely impressed with Schulz’s line, he was able to reproduce the line art almost exactly, which in turn impressed Schulz at their meeting. It was directly at this time that Everhart confirmed his obsession with Schulz’s line art style and their ongoing relationship of friendship and education of his line style. A few years later, while still painting full-time on his previous body of work in his studio, Everhart began drawing special projects for Schulz and United Media, both in New York and Tokyo. These authentic Schulz-style drawings included covers and interiors of magazines, art for the White House, and the majority of the Met Life campaign. When Everhart was not painting, he was now considered to be the only fine artist authorized and educated by Schulz to draw the actual Schulz line. The paintings using Charles Schulz’s comic strip, Peanuts, as subject matter began and replaced the skeleton and nature related paintings in 1988. The inspiration came to Everhart in Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was undergoing several operations for stage 4 colon / liver cancer in the summer of 1988. Everhart recalls lying in a hospital bed surrounded by enough flowers to open a florist shop, piles of art books and a stack of Peanuts comic strips sent to him by Schulz. The light streaming in from the window almost projected the new images of his future Schulz inspired paintings on the wall. All the images in Everhart’s work are in some respect derived from Schulz’s Peanuts comic strip. In January 1990 Everhart’s Schulz related work went on to show at the Louvre in Paris and subsequently in Los Angeles at the L.A. County... --- ### Fifty Years - **URL:** https://www.areaarts.com/grace-slick/fifty-years/ - **Published:** 2016-01-29 - **Modified:** 2016-02-16 - **Author:** M1k3B EXCLUSIVE OFFER TO AREA ARTS CLIENTS Fifty Years This year’s recipient of the Grammy lifetime achievement award To commemorate the 50 years of the Band San Francisco – February 16th 1966 (The first time the band played together with Grace Slick.) Grace uses 5 x 7 index cards to jot down ideas that she has for paintings and then expands that to small drawings. These drawings are the working guide for her paintings. Some contain corrections and notations about how the final painting will be completed. These editing marks are part of the piece and collectors particularly like these drawings because of the energy that they contain. After doing the initial drawing Grace has the piece enlarged to whatever size she wants the completed painting to be. Using this enlarged drawing as a guide she then paints the piece on the canvas or carves it in the scratchboard. These drawings are truly jewels that are highly sought after by collectors. Grace does many drawings in a sequence as an exercise in the style she is working on at the time. She also introduces other mediums into her drawings to give them a different dimension. As one can imagine, collectors are purchasing these drawings as soon as they are made available. John had already agreed that a specially designed bag would be the obvious solution. They commissioned Ted Lapidus, the French clothing designer, to create a stylish white carrying case complete with zips, handles and a lock. Three Hundred of the bags, each to hold a complete set of lithographs were hand stitched by craftsmen in Italy. As a final touch Bag One and John Lennon’s signature are imprinted in black letters onto the white patent leather. The lithographs were first exhibited in January 1970 at the London Arts Gallery with Lennon and Yoko Ono attending the opening. This is an extremely rare historical artifact. Very few have survived over the last 55 years since they were created. This is an exceptionally fine example that is in near mint condition. Each piece is hand-signed and numbered by the artist and is accompanied with a certificate of authenticity from Area Arts, publisher of the artwork of Grace Slick. Area and Grace both feel that with the technology available to artists now through high tech printing processes, enables the artist to use the print-making process as part of her own creative process. By using many different types of printing, we are able to give the artwork of Grace Slick a sense of diversity that is able to showcase all of her various styles. Some of the processes used in creating Grace’s limited editions are: Serigraph; a printing process that uses numerous screens to lay the inks on the paper or canvas. Copperplate, aquatint etching; an old world method of printing that uses an acid etched copper plate to apply the ink to the paper. Giclee; a state-of-the-art technology that creates printed editions at extremely high resolution. The edition sizes range from 90 to 500 depending upon the piece and the media. All of Grace’s limited editions are available unframed or framed in a beautiful museum-quality frame. She often says that the subject matter dictates how the piece will be executed. She creates motion and energy on the painting by layering the acrylic very heavy on the canvas; using this and other techniques she is able to achieve deep and rich colors that seem to glow. She also has an uncanny ability to work in the reverse. Her examples of white on black paintings, particularly her work on scratchboard, are considered some of her best. When she started painting professionally, over ten years ago, she began to take a more serious look at her artwork and started sketching with colored pencils and pastels. She found this medium easy to work with and it provided instant gratification. However, over the last 10 years, she has developed her style with paints and now works primarily with acrylic on canvas to create her impressive paintings. The subject matter of Grace's paintings ranges from intricate portraits of her Rock contemporaries to very minimal Sumi style nudes. She has also developed a reputation as one of the best scratchboard artists currently working. The scratchboard is perfect for her because it is working in the reverse, which she likes, as well as fine detail that is difficult to achieve with paints. As one can imagine, collectors are purchasing Grace's major paintings very quickly after she completes them. While we make every effort to keep the web site current, some of the pieces shown may have already been sold due to the high demand for her work. "As far as I can determine at this point, creation is taking place constantly and my life is a result of and pursuit of that process. Sometimes the form is music; sometimes it is giving birth to another human being, or maybe just sitting and appreciating a sunset. Simply watching beauty helps it “exist”. At this time in my evolution, painting is the way “it” wants to take shape. I create with the help of that massive system of energy that permeates everything and allows it to be distributed for free. As a conduit, I am occasionally quite clear – but as a beginner, the results can be technically raw. When I am in the process of painting I am gone – to a place that relieves me of trivia and encourages the expression of a more vibrant existence. It (painting) is a still form. Unlike film, the movement has to be implied on the canvas and translated to you by way of a mutual and basic recognition. When I see a work of art that raises my own level of appreciation, it becomes propulsion that, in turn, moves me into the creative continuum. By receiving my work you complete the celebration." - Grace Slick --- ### Store - **URL:** https://www.areaarts.com/store/ - **Published:** 2009-09-25 - **Modified:** 2012-05-03 - **Author:** admin Most artwork pricing listed with each piece. [su_accordion][su_spoiler title="Click here Read More about Grace Slick"] Area Arts began working with Grace Slick and her artwork in the fall of 1999. I was at a meeting in the Grateful Dead Productions headquarters in Novato CA. One of the people that worked there asked me if I would be interested in talking with Grace about the art that she was doing. I flew to Southern CA. and met with her. After the meeting we agreed to work together and develop her art line. The first exhibit that we held was in Ft Lauderdale FL. In January 2000. We premiered her first three limited editions; Slick, Garcia W&B and Janis Wood Nymph at the first show she attended. This exhibit was in Seattle WA. In June 2000. The art is extremely popular, thousands of people attended the exhibits. In the following years we produced over 100 exhibits across the country. These exhibits contained some of Grace's finest paintings and limited editions. During this time, we sold over 200 original works and published over 50 different hand signed limited editions. Many of which are considered to be her best work. We are proud to have been the producer of the Grace Slick art exhibits. We hope that you enjoy the art as much as we have.
